In August of 1885, Ceila Cann provided monies in her estate for the erection of a Presbyterian church in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. At that time there was a strong group of people of the “Presbyterian Persuasion” and she felt they needed to have their own church.
Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church was organized in 1889 and the first sanctuary was dedicated June 26, 1892.
On the 50 anniversary in 1939 a Building Program was started to build a new church in a new location.
The current church location was chosen and construction was begun as part of a program called “Triumph of Faith”. The new church was completed and dedicated in 1944.
Since 1892 Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church has continued to be a vibrant community of believers, challenging and committing ourselves to serve Christ through Discipleship, Stewardship, and Leadership.
